What over the counter drug is like indomethacin for coughs and colds? What over-the-counter drug works as well for rheumatism ibuprofen? Do we need a new class of drugs for treating arthritis or other inflammatory diseases? Some of these questions are course very scientific, and have been the subject of intensive scientific research for decades, but the science is still in discovery phase at this stage. What is clear that a large body of basic science research is in progress on the topic of immune system's role in inflammatory processes. What we do know at this stage, however, is that if we don't intervene early in the course of an inflammatory disease before a new develops, that disease will come and go. One of the main strategies immune system is to fight infection, and it does this by recruiting white blood cells called B to attack and destroy foreign invaders. The basic unit of immune system in humans, however, is the lymph node. An important feature of the lymph node is that it situated adjacent to the lymph glands, which contain fluid that can be drained and re-infused to the lymph nodes after each infection. This principle led to the creation of an entirely new class drugs for treating various types of infections. This class drugs came to be known as cytokines because they were first synthesized by scientists in the 1940s to treat common cold (see sidebar), but they have since been used to treat such diverse illnesses as multiple sclerosis, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma, among other types of diseases.
